BA (Hons) Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing with Foundation Year

Course Overview

This degree offers a strong foundation in counselling theory and mental health, exploring key approaches such as Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and CBT. You’ll develop essential listening and communication skills, alongside an understanding of ethical practice and professional judgement. While not a qualification to practise as a counsellor, the course prepares you for postgraduate training and roles in the mental health and wellbeing sector. You’ll also build valuable transferable skills such as self-awareness, critical thinking, and decision-making.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

In your first year, you’ll explore key counselling approaches such as humanistic and psychodynamic theories, while developing academic and reflective skills. Modules include Counselling Skills 1, ethical issues in counselling, and human development. In year two, you’ll take a work placement and study CBT, mental health and distress, lifestyle and wellbeing, along with Counselling Skills 2. You’ll also develop your understanding of research and its application in real-world contexts. In your final year, you can tailor your learning with optional modules on topics like bereavement, addictions, coaching, or therapeutic work with children. You’ll also complete a research or work-based project, with the option to study applied CBT or mindfulness-based approaches.
