BA (Hons) Criminology with Foundation Year

Course Overview

Join a vibrant learning community where you’ll explore the causes and consequences of crime, the role of the justice system, and how society responds to social harm. From day one, you’ll engage in lively discussions, field trips to courts and prisons, and talks from guest speakers including ex-prisoners, police, and campaigners. Our foundation year helps build your academic confidence and skills, while small-group tutorials offer personalised support. Taught by experienced lecturers with real-world expertise and active research backgrounds, this course encourages you to think critically, challenge assumptions, and become a voice for positive change in the field of criminology.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

In the foundation year, you’ll explore key social science concepts, including inequality and justice, while building essential academic skills. You’ll be introduced to criminological theories, the criminal justice system, and the social and psychological causes of crime, with practical insights through visits like a trip to a Magistrates’ court. In later years, you’ll examine crime prevention, punishment, and global justice systems. You’ll also explore topics such as corporate and state crime, youth justice, and equality in policing. Your final year includes an independent research project or creative criminology assignment, plus optional modules to suit your interests.
